CoinGate alternatives, and is CoinGate legit?
CoinGate is a crypto payment gateway built around one idea: take crypto at checkout and receive euros, dollars or pounds in your bank. For many European businesses that is exactly right. For a store whose buyers pay in USDT, or an owner who wants crypto in their own wallet without a verification process, it is not. Here is an honest look at CoinGate and the alternatives.
Is CoinGate legit?
Yes, by the measures that can be checked. CoinGate received a MiCA licence, the EU’s licence for crypto-asset service providers, from the Bank of Lithuania in December 2025. It publishes its fees and verifies the businesses it serves. Being legitimate is a different question from being the right fit, and the points below are where merchants most often decide it is not.
How CoinGate works, and what it costs
You open a merchant account and complete business verification: incorporation documents, articles of association and a director’s ID. Payments are collected into your CoinGate balance and settled automatically each week, to a crypto wallet or to a bank account in EUR, USD or GBP. That makes CoinGate custodial: your revenue sits with CoinGate until it settles.
The standard plan charges 1% per transaction, with custom rates for large merchants and no monthly fee. Other charges include 1% for manual exchange, €0.25 plus 0.1% for refunds, and €0.50 plus 0.5% (or 1.5% with conversion) for crypto payouts; crypto and SEPA withdrawals are free above a €50 minimum, and SWIFT costs 0.5%. It accepts a short list of cryptocurrencies, with USDC on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism, but USDT is not on the list.
When an alternative fits better
Your buyers pay in USDT. Tether is the most-used stablecoin in many markets, especially on TRON. A gateway without it turns those buyers away.
You want crypto, not a bank transfer. If you plan to hold stablecoins anyway, routing them through a custodial balance and a weekly settlement adds a step and a counterparty.
You are not a registered company, or you do not want to submit company documents to start taking payments.
Your WooCommerce plugin should stay current. CoinGate’s plugin on WordPress.org was last updated about a year ago and is marked as untested with the latest WordPress releases.
The alternatives
Vaultion Payments is a free WooCommerce plugin in the WordPress.org directory with no account, no verification and no API key: paste a receiving address and the checkout is live. It accepts USDT on TRON and Solana, USDC on Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain and Solana, and BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, TRX, POL and BNB, for 0.75% per payment and nothing monthly. On EVM networks, Solana and TRON the buyer pays your wallet directly, with the fee split off in the same transaction; Bitcoin, Litecoin and the “Send to address” ETH option pass through a Vaultion deposit address and are forwarded after confirmation. It does not pay out in fiat, and it needs a USD store currency.
NOWPayments supports more than 300 coins including USDT on several networks, pays out to your wallet by default, and needs an account and API key but no KYC to sign up. Its published fee is 0.5% to 1% depending on conversion.
BitPay is the closest like-for-like if fiat settlement is the point: seven settlement currencies, Shopify support, application and verification first, and 2% plus 25 cents per transaction under $500k a month.
BTCPay Server is free and self-hosted, non-custodial and KYC-free, built for Bitcoin and Lightning, with USDT only through community plugins.
Escrow for large orders
None of these gateways can hold a payment until the buyer confirms delivery. Vaultion Payments can: turn on escrow in USDC or USDT on six networks, and the payment sits in a smart contract, not with Vaultion, until the buyer confirms or the review period ends. The buyer pays the escrow fee (4% below 500 USDC, 3% from 500, 2% from 5,000). Disputes go to Vaultion-assisted human arbitration, which is not decentralized: you are trusting Vaultion’s reviewers. A separate guardian can pause a ruling but never redirect funds.
See it for yourself
Vaultion runs on a published, open-source contract that holds the funds — not Vaultion. You can read it and the locked balance on the block explorer before you send anything.
