Trustap alternatives for safe high-value sales
Trustap is a payment-protection service for buying and selling between strangers: the buyer pays by card, the money is held until delivery, and the seller is paid once a short complaint window passes. It is a good fit for marketplace sales in fiat. For a high-value deal, a cross-border sale or a buyer who wants to pay in crypto, its fees, its timing and who decides disputes are worth comparing. Here are the alternatives.
How Trustap works
The buyer pays through Trustap by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a local method, with bank transfer for large amounts. The money is held in the “Trustap Vault” through Stripe, and released to the seller after the complaint period, which is 24 hours after delivery or handover and cannot be extended, though raising a complaint pauses the release. If there is a dispute, Trustap, or the marketplace it is working with, decides which side is liable, and that decision is final.
For an in-app sale the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee: 4.4% plus 40 cents in USD, 3% plus 0.40 in EUR or GBP, with other rates in other currencies, and lower rates on sales above 5,000. Trustap’s terms say the fee is non-refundable, add 1.5% when buyer and seller are in different regions, and charge 50 per chargeback. Sellers can register in about 31 European countries, the US, Canada, Australia and a handful of others. Trustap does not handle cryptocurrency.
Where Trustap may not fit
A 24-hour window is short for anything that needs real inspection, such as a graded card, a watch, a domain transfer or a piece of software.
A non-refundable fee means a buyer who cancels still pays it.
Cross-border deals carry an extra 1.5%, and sellers outside the supported countries cannot register.
If the deal is in crypto, or either side wants to settle in stablecoins, Trustap is not an option.
The alternatives
Escrow.com is the long-established fiat escrow service for high-value goods, vehicles and domains, with longer inspection periods agreed between the parties. It works in fiat currencies; its own policy excludes cryptocurrency.
PayPal Goods and Services gives buyers Purchase Protection, but it is not escrow: the seller is paid up front and PayPal decides claims afterwards.
Vaultion is on-chain escrow in stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI and PYUSD, depending on the network) on Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum One, Base, BNB Smart Chain, TRON, and Solana. The buyer’s payment is locked in a smart contract, not held by Vaultion or the seller, and released when the buyer confirms delivery or when the review period you set ends. Disputes are decided by your choice of independent Kleros jurors or a Vaultion reviewer on Ethereum, and a Vaultion reviewer on every other network; where a Vaultion reviewer decides, that is not decentralized and you are trusting Vaultion’s reviewers. The fee is 4% from $50, 3% from $500 and 2% from $5,000, paid once at creation, with no account and no seller registration: anyone with a wallet can use it.
Which to choose
Selling to a buyer who pays by card on a marketplace that already uses Trustap: Trustap is built for it. A large fiat deal with a bank transfer: Escrow.com. A deal where either side holds crypto, a cross-border sale, or one where the buyer wants days rather than hours to inspect: a stablecoin escrow like Vaultion, where both parties can see the locked funds on a block explorer before anything ships.
See it for yourself
Vaultion runs on a published, open-source contract that holds the funds — not Vaultion. You can read it and the locked balance on the block explorer before you send anything.
