BTCPay Server alternatives: no server, stablecoins built in
BTCPay Server is the gold standard for merchants who want Bitcoin payments with no middleman: free, open-source, non-custodial and KYC-free. It asks two things in return. You run the server, or trust someone who runs it for you, and it is built for Bitcoin, so the stablecoins most crypto shoppers pay with come through add-ons. If either of those is a problem for your store, here are the alternatives.
What BTCPay Server does well, and what it asks of you
BTCPay Server takes no fee, never holds your private keys, and needs no sign-up or KYC. Its WooCommerce plugin is maintained and was updated in September 2026, and there is a Shopify integration through a custom app.
The costs are operational. Self-hosting runs roughly $10 to $20 a month on a hosting service, more on your own VPS, plus the time to keep the server updated and backed up. Free third-party hosts exist, but BTCPay’s own documentation warns that a host who keeps a hot wallet for you becomes your custodian, and that a malicious host could swap in its own wallet key. And while Bitcoin and Lightning are built in, other coins, including USDT on TRON, come through plugins maintained by their communities.
When an alternative fits better
Your buyers pay in stablecoins. Many crypto shoppers hold USDT on TRON or USDC on Base or Solana rather than Bitcoin, and you want those at checkout without depending on a community plugin.
You do not want to run infrastructure. A store owner without a technical team often prefers a plugin that works the moment it is activated.
You do not want to trust a third-party BTCPay host with a hot wallet.
The alternatives
Vaultion Payments is a free WooCommerce plugin in the WordPress.org directory with no server, no account and no API key: paste a receiving address and the checkout is live. USDT on TRON and Solana, USDC on Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain and Solana, and BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, TRX, POL and BNB are all built in. On EVM networks, Solana and TRON the buyer pays your wallet directly and the 0.75% fee is split off in the same transaction. It is not fee-free like BTCPay, and Bitcoin, Litecoin and the “Send to address” ETH option pass through a Vaultion deposit address and are forwarded after confirmation, so for Bitcoin specifically BTCPay keeps you closer to the chain. It needs a USD store currency.
NOWPayments takes more than 300 coins and forwards payments to your own wallet, with an account and API key but no KYC to sign up, for 0.5% to 1% depending on conversion.
CoinGate charges 1%, requires business verification and settles weekly, including to a bank in EUR, USD or GBP, under a MiCA licence. It does not list USDT.
BitPay settles to a bank in seven currencies after an application and verification, at 2% plus 25 cents per transaction for smaller merchants.
Escrow for high-value orders
BTCPay Server and the gateways above take a payment and finish. Vaultion Payments can also hold a large order in escrow, in USDC or USDT on six networks: the payment sits in a smart contract, not with Vaultion, until the buyer confirms delivery or the review period ends. The buyer pays the escrow fee (4% below 500 USDC, 3% from 500, 2% from 5,000). Disputes go to Vaultion-assisted human arbitration, which is not decentralized: you are trusting Vaultion’s reviewers. A separate guardian can pause a ruling but never redirect funds.
See it for yourself
Vaultion runs on a published, open-source contract that holds the funds — not Vaultion. You can read it and the locked balance on the block explorer before you send anything.
Frequently asked
Is BTCPay Server really free?
The software is free and takes no fee. Hosting it yourself costs roughly $10 to $20 a month on a hosting service, more on your own VPS, plus maintenance time. Some third-party hosts are free.
Does BTCPay Server support USDT?
Bitcoin and Lightning are built in. USDT, including USDT on TRON, is available through community-maintained plugins.
Is there a BTCPay alternative without running a server?
Vaultion Payments is a WooCommerce plugin with nothing to host: paste a receiving address and take USDT, USDC, BTC and more. NOWPayments, CoinGate and BitPay are hosted services with their own sign-up steps.
Is a hosted BTCPay instance non-custodial?
Only if the host does not hold a hot wallet for you. BTCPay’s documentation warns that a host who does becomes your custodian.
