Coinbase Commerce alternatives for WooCommerce stores
If your WooCommerce store took crypto through Coinbase Commerce, 2026 forced a decision. The product is being folded into Coinbase Business, a custodial account, and the official Coinbase Commerce plugin on WordPress.org was closed on 5 October 2026. Here is what changed, what the realistic replacements are, and the questions that decide between them.
What changed with Coinbase Commerce
Coinbase Commerce launched as a self-managed checkout: buyers paid, and the crypto went to a wallet the merchant controlled. That model has been wound down in stages. In February 2024 Commerce stopped accepting native Bitcoin and other UTXO coins. Through 2026 Coinbase has been moving Commerce merchants to Coinbase Business, a custodial business account offered in the US and Singapore; migration guides published by payment providers put the end of self-managed Commerce for merchants elsewhere at 31 March 2026. Check Coinbase’s own transition notice for your account, because dates and regions have shifted.
For WooCommerce stores the practical problem is the plugin. The official “Coinbase Commerce” plugin on WordPress.org was closed on 5 October 2026, marked as temporary pending a full review, after two years without an update. A third-party plugin connects WooCommerce to Coinbase Business, but it accepts USDC on Base only. If you want Bitcoin, Tether, or more than one network, you need a different gateway.
The four questions that actually decide it
Who holds the money? A custodial gateway collects payments into its own account and pays you out later; a direct gateway sends the payment to a wallet you control. Custodial is convenient if you want fiat in a bank account, but your revenue sits with a company until it is settled.
What do you have to sign up for? Some gateways need an application, business verification and an API key before the first sale. Others need only a wallet address. Which is right depends on whether you need invoices in euros and a bank payout, or just crypto in your wallet.
Which coins and networks do your buyers use? Most crypto shoppers pay in a stablecoin. USDC on Base or Solana and USDT on TRON are the cheapest to send, so a gateway that only takes one of them turns buyers away at checkout.
What does it cost all in? Compare the per-payment fee, conversion fees, payout fees and any monthly charge, not just the headline rate.
The alternatives, honestly compared
BTCPay Server is free, open-source and self-hosted. It never holds your keys and needs no sign-up or KYC. It is built for Bitcoin and Lightning; stablecoins such as USDT come through community-maintained plugins. Hosting your own costs roughly $10–20 a month, and a third-party host that keeps a hot wallet for you becomes your custodian. Best if you are technical and Bitcoin-first.
NOWPayments needs an account and an API key, supports more than 300 coins including USDT on several networks, and by default pays out to your own wallet. Its pricing page lists a 1% service fee, while its own fees article describes 0.5% when no conversion happens, so confirm the rate for your setup. Its official WooCommerce plugin is a download from its site; the WordPress.org listing under its name is a third-party build.
CoinGate charges 1% on its standard plan, requires business verification for merchant tools, and collects payments into your CoinGate balance with automatic weekly settlement, including payouts in EUR, USD or GBP. It received a MiCA licence from the Bank of Lithuania in December 2025. Its currency list shows USDC on many networks but no USDT. Best if you need regulated fiat settlement in Europe.
BitPay is the long-established option with fiat settlement in seven currencies and Shopify support. You apply and pass verification first, and its published rate is 2% plus 25 cents per transaction for merchants under $500k a month. Payments are credited to your BitPay account, then settled.
Vaultion Payments is a free WooCommerce plugin with no account, no API key and no approval step: you paste a receiving address and “Pay with Crypto!” appears at checkout. It takes BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, TRX, POL and BNB, USDC on Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain and Solana, and USDT on Solana and TRON. The fee is 0.75% per payment, nothing monthly. On EVM networks, Solana and TRON the buyer pays your wallet directly, with the fee split off in the same transaction; Bitcoin, Litecoin and the “Send to address” ETH option pass through a Vaultion deposit address and are forwarded to you after confirmation. It needs a USD store currency, and Shopify support is still waiting on Shopify’s approval.
What none of the big gateways offer: buyer protection
A confirmed crypto payment cannot be charged back, which is good for the merchant and a reason some buyers hesitate on expensive orders. None of the gateways above holds a payment until the buyer confirms delivery.
Vaultion Payments can. For higher-value orders you can turn on escrow in USDC or USDT on six networks: the payment is held by a smart contract, not by Vaultion, and released when the buyer confirms or the review period ends. Escrow has its own fee, paid by the buyer (4% below 500 USDC, 3% from 500, 2% from 5,000). Disputes go to Vaultion-assisted human arbitration, which is not decentralized: you are trusting Vaultion’s reviewers. A separate guardian can pause a ruling but never redirect funds. You choose whether escrow is off, the buyer’s choice, or required.
Moving off Coinbase Commerce without losing orders
Install the new gateway before you deactivate the old one, and place a small real test order through it. Leave the Coinbase plugin installed but disabled until every open Coinbase charge has expired or been paid, so late payments still update their orders. Then update any saved payment links or invoices that point at old Coinbase checkout pages, and tell repeat customers which coins and networks you now accept.
See it for yourself
Vaultion runs on a published, open-source contract that holds the funds — not Vaultion. You can read it and the locked balance on the block explorer before you send anything.
Frequently asked
Is Coinbase Commerce shutting down?
The self-managed Commerce product is being folded into Coinbase Business, a custodial account for US and Singapore merchants, and the official Coinbase Commerce WooCommerce plugin was closed on WordPress.org on 5 October 2026. Check Coinbase’s transition notice for the dates that apply to your account.
What is the easiest Coinbase Commerce replacement for WooCommerce?
If you want crypto paid to your own wallet with no sign-up, a keyless plugin such as Vaultion Payments is live as soon as you paste an address. If you need fiat payouts to a bank, a custodial gateway with business verification (CoinGate, BitPay) fits better.
Can I still accept USDC like I did on Coinbase Commerce?
Yes. Vaultion Payments takes USDC on Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain and Solana, and USDT on Solana and TRON. CoinGate and NOWPayments also take USDC.
Do these gateways offer chargebacks or buyer protection?
No crypto payment can be charged back. Buyer protection is different: of the gateways compared here, only Vaultion Payments offers optional escrow, where the payment is held by a smart contract until the buyer confirms delivery.
