BitPay alternatives for small online stores

6 min read·Oct 14, 2026·Reviewed by the Vaultion Team

BitPay is one of the oldest names in crypto payments: buyers pay in crypto, and the merchant receives dollars, euros or one of several other currencies in the bank. That is a good fit for an established business that has to book revenue in fiat. For a small store, a freelancer or an owner who is happy to be paid in stablecoins, the application, verification and fee structure can be more than the job needs. Here is how BitPay compares with the alternatives.

How BitPay works and what it costs

You apply for a merchant account and pass verification in tiers that ask for business registration, owner identification and a tax ID. Payments are credited to your BitPay merchant account and settled daily in one of seven currencies: AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, MXN, NZD or USD. It accepts BTC, ETH, LTC, DOGE, XRP and others, plus stablecoins including USDC, DAI and EURC, and it supports Shopify as well as WooCommerce.

BitPay’s pricing page lists 2% plus 25 cents per transaction for merchants processing under $500,000 a month, 1.5% plus 25 cents from $500,000 to $1 million, and 1% above that, with higher rates for high-risk industries. Its WooCommerce plugin page mentions a 1% processing fee, so confirm your rate with BitPay directly.

When an alternative fits better

You are a small store or a sole trader. Business registration and a tax ID can be a hurdle, and on a $40 order a fixed 25-cent charge on top of 2% is a meaningful share.

You want to keep crypto. If you are happy to hold stablecoins, settlement to a bank adds a step you do not need, and a custodial account sits between the buyer and you.

Your buyers pay in USDT on TRON. Check that any gateway you choose takes the coin and network your customers actually use.

The alternatives

Vaultion Payments is a free WooCommerce plugin in the WordPress.org directory with no application, no verification and no API key: paste a receiving address and “Pay with Crypto!” appears at checkout. It charges one 0.75% fee per payment, with no fixed per-transaction charge and nothing monthly. On EVM networks, Solana and TRON the buyer pays your wallet directly, with the fee split off in the same transaction; Bitcoin, Litecoin and the “Send to address” ETH option pass through a Vaultion deposit address and are forwarded after confirmation. It takes USDT on TRON and Solana, USDC on six networks, and BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, TRX, POL and BNB. It does not pay out in fiat, needs a USD store currency, and its Shopify app is still waiting on Shopify’s approval.

CoinGate is the closest match if you still want fiat: 1% per transaction, business verification, weekly settlement to a bank in EUR, USD or GBP, and a MiCA licence. It does not list USDT.

NOWPayments takes more than 300 coins and forwards payments to your own wallet, with an account and API key but no KYC to sign up. Its published fee is 0.5% to 1% depending on conversion.

BTCPay Server is free and self-hosted, never touches your keys and needs no KYC. It is built for Bitcoin and Lightning, and you run the server.

Escrow for high-value orders

BitPay, like every gateway here, cannot hold a payment until the buyer confirms delivery. Vaultion Payments can: switch on escrow in USDC or USDT on six networks, and the payment sits in a smart contract, not with Vaultion, until the buyer confirms or the review period ends. The buyer pays the escrow fee (4% below 500 USDC, 3% from 500, 2% from 5,000). Disputes go to Vaultion-assisted human arbitration, which is not decentralized: you are trusting Vaultion’s reviewers. A separate guardian can pause a ruling but never redirect funds.

See it for yourself

Vaultion runs on a published, open-source contract that holds the funds — not Vaultion. You can read it and the locked balance on the block explorer before you send anything.
